Lab Exercises : Discussion
First of all let us understand the objectives of the labs in week 1. Most of these have been stated in the lab manual or in the labs, but are repeated here for reinforcement.
Each of these labs is not an "end in itself" - it is a means to an end. It is very likely that the histology lab caused you more concern than the anatomy lab, therefore it is described first.
The main objectives of the histology lab were:
Once you are able to do this, it is wonderful if you can go beyond the limits of this lab, but that is not essential at this stage.
Let us begin with Exercise A.
Accuracy is not the issue here! Cells of a single type can also vary in size. We just use our judgment to make a good guess. The long side of cell P is 3 to 4 times the size of the red blood cell. One can say that it is about 25 μm in diameter. It does not matter if you said 30μm.
Further : In this unit you are not going to identify this organ as the liver (that is for 2214).
As mentioned in the manual, take the capillary ('R') to be roughly equal to the size of a red blood cell. This neuron body (Q) is probably as large as 50μm in diameter. The one on the left side appears even larger. In fact some neuron bodies can be as large as 100μm in diameter.
